Work with an item in the BOM view

The BOM view enables you to view all items within a project, as well as an item’s cBOM and eBOM when working with an open item. From this view, you may download or check out an item to make attribute changes, upload supporting documentation, and view an item's cBOM and eBOM.

View a project BOM

  1. Select the desired project in the context selector.
  2. Click the BOM view icon (BOM_view_icon.png) in the menu bar.
  3. Select Project BOM from the drop-down.
  4. Expand the eBOM tree.

All BOM items show their status and item type. Clicking an item opens its detail view in the lower pane where you can find the following information:

  • The Item tab (BOM_detail_item_tab.png) displays additional details about the selected BOM item.
  • The Documents tab (item_detail_view_-_documents_tab.png) displays the item's associated supporting documents, design documents, translation documents, and drawings. Click the download icon beside each document to download it.
  • The Preview tab (item_detail_view_-_preview_tab.png) displays a thumbnail of the item. Click Download to open the item in the viewer.
  • The Categorization tab (item_detail_view_-_categorization_tab.png) displays the item’s associated categories.
  • The Where Used tab (item_detail_view_-_where_used_tab.png) displays the locations that the item is associated with.
  • The activities tab (item_detail_view_-_activities_tab.png) displays the engineering change activities (work orders) associated with the item.

Project BOM filters

Product design is a collaborative effort. It is often the case that many different people - potentially working on different projects - will be working on individual parts within the same assembly at the same time. The Upchain Project BOM filters enable you to view the full engineering BOM of a project in different states. These filters are eBOM filters, which means they affect the item versions that are displayed under each End Item.

  • Saved eBOM - Displays the eBOM structure containing the specific item versions with which the eBOM was last checked into Upchain. In other words, the item versions that you added to your cBOM and subsequently pushed to your eBOM using the BOM Anomaly window is what is displayed under this filter. This filter applies to the full Project BOM tree; if you have been modifying the eBOM structure for an item several levels below the End Item, this is updated accordingly under this filter.

Note: This filter behaves the same as the As Saved filter for items in the BOM section of a project in the Web application.
  • Working eBOM - Displays the eBOM structure containing the latest item versions of each item in the saved eBOM structure. In other words, this filter begins with the Saved eBOM filter and updates each item to its most recently created item version, starting from the top of the tree and working down. This filter also applies to the full Project BOM tree; all items are displayed as their latest version down the full tree.

Note: This filter behaves the same as the Latest Working filter for items loaded into the center view in the BOM section of a project in the Web application.
  • The Released eBOM filter displays the latest released version of the End Item, which you can then expand to see the released items underneath it. All other non-released End Items are greyed out and cannot be expanded.

  • The Effective date filter displays the item versions created before and up to the Effective Date set for your project. Any items (End Items and those below) created after the Effective Date are not shown. Note that for the items that are shown under this filter, they will always be the latest version based on their creation date.

Note: If you have not enabled the Effective Date option for this project type, or set an Effective Date for the project, this filter will not be displayed. This filter behaves the same as the Effective Date filter for End Items in the BOM section of a project in the Web application.
Note: With any of the filters applied, when you select an item, the lower pane displays information about that item version including what its latest CAD file version is, even if that file version is not what is saved in the cBOM.

  8. (Optional) Select the appropriate Load Filter.

  9. In the left column, all model files are selected by default. In the second next column over, decide if you want to download the associated drawings (if they exist).

Tip: Right-click the drawing column heading to select all, select none, or select by item status.
Note: The Download window displays a box next to every item regardless of whether it has a drawing. If you select a box beside an item that does not have a corresponding drawing, then no drawing is downloaded.
  10. Click Download to begin the download process.

When the files finish downloading to your local home folder, click Open model (or Open drawing if you selected the parent level drawing).

The CAD model is downloaded to your home folder and opens in the Generic plugin viewer. The CAD file is in read-only state.

View the cBOM and eBOM of an open item

  1. Open an item from your computer or from an Upchain project.
  2. Click the BOM view icon (BOM_view_icon.png) in the menu bar.
  3. Select cBOM or eBOM from the drop-down list.
  4. Click Refresh.

If the open CAD file is registered in Upchain, you will be able to see its complete cBOM and eBOM. If the CAD file is not registered in Upchain, its cBOM will only display the names of your CAD files (assemblies and components), and its eBOM will be empty.

Check out an item from the project BOM

  1. Select the project from the context selector.

  2. Click the BOM view icon (BOM_view_icon.png).

  3. Select Project BOM from the drop-down.

  4. Expand the eBOM tree.

  5. Locate the desired item.

  6. Right-click the item and select Check out.

The Check out files window opens.

  7. (Optional) Choose which file version of the parent assembly you want to check out, if desired. This defaults to the latest version.

  8. (Optional) Select the appropriate Load Filter.

  9. Click the box in the first column beside any child items that you also want to check out at the same time.

Tip: Right-click the left-most column heading to select CAD files by item status.
  10. Click the box in the second column to check out any drawings at the same time.

Tip: Right-click the second column heading to select drawings by item status.
Note: The Check out window displays a box next to every item regardless of whether it has a drawing. If you select a box beside an item that does not have a corresponding drawing, then no drawing is checked out.
  11. Click Download to download the files to your home folder.

When the files finish downloading to your local home folder, click Open model (or Open drawing if you selected the parent level drawing).

The CAD model is downloaded to your home folder and opens in the Generic plugin viewer. The CAD file is in a read-write state.

Note: You cannot make CAD model or drawing changes with the Generic plugin. When you check out an item, this enables you to edit its attributes and categorization. You must make CAD changes in its native CAD application.

In order to save your changes back into Upchain, you must save or check in.

Associate a CAD file to an existing BOM item

If you don't know where the item is located in Upchain

  1. Open the CAD file in the generic plugin.

  2. Click the BOM view icon (BOM_view_icon.png) in the menu bar.

  3. Select cBOM from the drop-down.

  4. Click Refresh (refresh_icon.png).

  5. Right-click an item in the cBOM and select Find item from the drop-down.

    The Search window opens.

  6. Search for the Upchain BOM item using any of the available attributes.

    • Click More and select an attribute from the list.
    • Enter the corresponding information.
    • The Search window will be populated with search results.
  7. Double-click the Upchain item in the search results to associate the opened CAD with that item.

If you know where the item is located within a BOM in Upchain

  1. Open the CAD file in the generic plugin.

  2. Select the desired Upchain project from the context selector.

  3. Click the BOM view icon (BOM_view_icon.png) in the menu bar.

  4. Select Project BOM from the drop-down.

  5. Right-click the item in the Project BOM and select Attach active CAD file.

The CAD Check in window opens. If the CAD file you are associating with an item contains child components, you may use the CAD Check in window to create items for them now. Otherwise, all child components will be registered as phantom by default.

  6. Click OK.

The CAD file is now associated with the item in Upchain and the item is locked or checked out to you (green check out lock). Refresh the cBOM view to see this.

Note: You cannot make CAD model or drawing changes with the Generic plugin. When you check out an item, this enables you to edit its attributes and categorization. You must make CAD changes in its native CAD application.

Create a new BOM item from CAD

  1. Make sure you have the CAD file open in your CAD system.

  2. Click the BOM view icon (BOM_view_icon.png) in the menu bar.

  3. Select cBOM from the drop-down.

  4. Click Refresh (refresh_icon.png).

  5. Right-click the item in the cBOM and select Create item.

    The Project selection window opens.

  6. Click the box next to the project in which to create the item. If you want to add this item as a child to an existing item within that project's BOM, expand the chevron to the left of the project name and check the box next to the desired item.

  7. Click Select.

  8. If the item you selected already contains child items, Upchain presents you with a message asking if you want to add new items to the structure. The existing items will remain untouched. Click Yes to continue.

  9. The CAD Check in window opens to provide a preview of the cBOM files (left side) and the engineering BOM items to be created (right side). By default, all files will have a green checkmark icon beside them to indicate that for each file, a corresponding BOM item will be created. You may perform the following actions in this window:

    • (Optional) Click the check mark to change it to an X to register the CAD file as a phantom.
    • (Optional) Change the item type in the Item Type column.
  10. Click OK at the bottom of the CAD Check in window. The designs of the assembly and all child parts are now associated with Upchain items, assigned unique item numbers, and saved in the Upchain database.

Note: The item name is taken from the corresponding CAD file name. The item number is generated from the item numbering rules set by your Tenant Administrator. The item description is not filled in during registration.

Your newly-created items are now locked (checked out) to you as shown with a green check out lock and green text. This is so that you can make changes to the item attributes or categorization before checking the item in.
