Use the Timeline

Learn how to create, edit, reorder, and organize parametric features in the Timeline in Fusion.

Play back the design history

The buttons to the left let you perform several operations to revisit your or someone else's design which is especially helpful with complex assemblies.

You can:

  • Click play icon Play to automatically step through each feature in the design.
  • Click move to beginning icon Move to Beginning to quickly move the Timeline Marker to the beginning of the Timeline.
  • Click move to end icon Move to End to quickly move the Timeline Marker to the end of the Timeline.
  • Click previous step icon Previous Step and next step icon Next Step to click through the individual features.

Edit features

To edit features, do one of the following:

  • Double-click the feature you want to edit.
  • Right-click the feature you want to edit, then select Edit Feature.

Rename features

Renaming features can be helpful if you need to find a specific feature later on.

  1. Right-click the feature you want to rename.
  2. Select Rename.
  3. Enter a new name.
  4. Press Enter.

Suppress features

Suppressing features makes the features and all dependent features temporarily unavailable. They aren’t displayed in the canvas and are dimmed in the Timeline.

  1. Right-click the feature you want to suppress.
  2. Select Suppress Features.

Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Command (MacOS) to select multiple features.

Unsuppress features

  1. Right-click the suppressed feature.
  2. Select Unsuppress Features.

Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Command (MacOS) to select multiple features.

Drag features

You can click and drag features around to reorder them in time to achieve different results or fix errors in your design. One of the most common errors occur when using the Shell feature.

In the example below, you can see a Fillet was added after the Shell feature resulting in losing the solid edge. Dragging the Fillet before the Shell feature fixes the error.

Organize features into groups

Organizing features into groups can be helpful when you have complex assemblies.

  1. Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Command (MacOS) to select multiple features.
  2. Right-click the selected features and select Create Group.

Fusion groups the selected features together and a Plus button displays within the Timeline. You can click the Plus button to expand the group to access the features. Then click the Minus button to collapse the group.

Rename groups

Renaming groups can be helpful if you need to find a specific group later on and makes it easier for other project members to understand the design.

  1. Right-click the group you want to rename.
  2. Select Rename.
  3. Enter a new name.
  4. Press Enter.

Delete groups

You have two options while deleting groups. You can either delete a group and expand its contents or delete both the group and its contents.

  1. Right-click the group you want to delete.

  2. Select Delete.

    The Group Delete dialog displays.

  3. Select one of the following:

    • Delete group and expand its contents
    • Delete both group and its contents
  4. Click OK.

Find in Browser

  1. Right-click the feature you want to find in the Browser.
  2. Select Find in Browser.

The related features are highlighted in the Browser by dashed lines.

Create selection sets

Creating selection sets is a quick way to select multiple different features or components in a complex assembly at once.

  1. Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Command (MacOS) to select multiple features.
  2. Right-click the selected features and select Create Selection Set.

A new Selection Sets folder is added to the Browser.

Every other selection set you create is added to this folder, where you can use the Select button to select the selection set, or the Update button to update the selection set. You can rename the selection sets for an even better orientation.

Toggle Component Color Swatch

Component Color Swatch applies different colors to the features in the Timeline according to their components.

Component Color Swatch is only available when Inspect > Display Component Colors is off. But together these tools help you organize and visualize the design based on the component.

  1. Click Options settings icon on the right side of the Timeline.
  2. Check the Component Color Swatch checkbox.

Hide all inactive features

  1. Click Options settings icon on the right side of the Timeline.
  2. Check the Hide all inactive features checkbox to display only the features of the active component.

Switch a design to Direct Modeling Mode

  1. In the Timeline, on the right side, click Options settings icon.
  2. Select Change to Direct Modeling Mode do not capture design history icon.
