Use the Connection tool to add a structural connection to elements in your structural model.

When you design a structural model, the structural connections for elements depend on many factors beyond their purpose of joining elements. These factors often include the standards of the contracted engineer, the contractor, or the fabricator. Even the type of structure will influence the type of connection.
The purpose of Revit structural connections is to exchange information about the designed connection between engineers, detailers, and fabricators. This data is saved in the project. Detailed information about connections can include the following:
- Connection type
- Connected elements
- Detailed geometry
- Analytical forces and data
- Materials
- Fabricator identification
- Code checking workflow
- Approval workflow
- Phasing
A structural connection family includes:
Structural connection family types
|
- you can
load into the project, to replace the default Generic connection family type.
- you can duplicate and rename them.
- you can change them after creating them, using the type selector in the Properties palette.
|
Structural sub-connection family types
|
- structural connections family types with limited options.
- you cannot duplicate and rename them.
- you cannot change them after creating them, using the type selector in the Properties palette.

By default, connections have very basic parameters regarding identity data and phasing. Add project parameters and shared parameters to the Structural Connections category to include specific information to be stored and shared with project stakeholders.
You can add tags and create schedules for instances of structural connections.
Note: The Revit API platform can be leveraged by customers and third-party developers to create their own connections and integrate them into Revit, as Revit supports add-ins for user-designed parametric structural connections. Structural connection add-ins are API-driven user interfaces that enable you to view detailed structural connection geometry and to modify additional parameters in the Revit modeling environment. Unless structural connection add-ins are installed, only the symbolic generic connection and the loaded standard steel connections are available. Appropriate Revit add-ins must be installed to open models that contain add-in structural connections, otherwise, the connections display but cannot be edited. Some add-ins may require a subscription.
