Exercise 1: Connect to Background Data

Use Data Connect to display background data, just as you would in any map.

To connect to data

  1. Click Home > Connect To Data.
  2. In the Data Connect window, click the appropriate provider in the Data Connections By Provider list.
  3. Click the file icon.
  4. Navigate to the data store and open it.
  5. Click Connect.
  6. Click Add To Map.
  7. If the data you are adding uses a geographic coordinate system—or if the units do not match those of the industry model—you can keep that setting or specify a different one.
  8. Add as many data sources as desired.

    You can leave the Data Connect window open between each data source you add.

  9. When you are finished, close the Data Connect window to see the data in your map.
