Rotational smoothing (PartMaker, Advanced Surface Manufacturing)

Use the Rotational smoothing page to smooth the tool orientation when using a rotational axis. The contact track of the tool remains unchanged, but the contact position on the tool is affected as the tool orientation changes.

Note: This page is available only for 4-Axis Simultaneous toolpaths, as selected on the Surface Group Parameters dialog.

Rotational smoothing — Select this option to enable rotational smoothing.

  • Maximum angular correction — Enter the maximum angular correction for the tool orientation. Changes in angle will not exceed this value unless the angle of the unsmoothed toolpath varies by more than the Maximum angular correction in less than the Smoothing distance. In such regions, the angle may change by more than the Maximum angular correction to give a smooth results.
  • Smoothing distance —Enter the distance over which to smooth the tool orientation. When sudden changes in direction occur in a toolpath (for example, a right-angled corner), rapid changes of orientation of the tool can leaves dwell marks. To prevent this, the Smoothing distance blends the change in orientation and improves the surface finish.
