This topic describes the methods that can be used to move around the Map view displayed in both the Headlines page and the Baseline pages.
Automatic panning
With auto-panning enabled:
- Large arrows appear when the cursor is moved close to the edges and corners of the map view.
- Click with the left mouse button to scroll the view in the direction indicated.
- Click and hold down the left mouse button to scroll repeatedly in the direction indicated.
To turn auto-panning on or off:
- Select Tools | Options.
This displays the Options dialog.
- Switch to the GeoPlan page.
- Check or un-check the Enable Auto-Panning option.
Manual panning
To use the manual panning tool:
- Turn on panning mode by clicking the
tool, or by pressing F8.
- Click and then hold down the left mouse button.
- Drag the pointer to another part of the map view and release the mouse button.
Panning can also be carried out by holding down the mouse scroll wheel while dragging the pointer on the map view.
Zooming on the Map view
There are a number of zoom tools available in the map view.
The current map view zoom level is displayed on the status bar at the bottom of the main window.
Zooming in
Activate Zoom In mode or QuickZoom mode:
- Click the
(Zoom in) tool on the Tools toolbar or press F9 to activate Zoom In mode.
- Hold down the Shift key to activate QuickZoom mode. This allows the zoom in tool to be used without changing the currently selected tool. QuickZoom remains in effect until the Shift key is released.
Use one of the following methods:
- Click once on the map view to zoom in by a fixed amount.
- Click and hold the left mouse button down, then drag the mouse to create a box around the area to be magnified.
Tips:
- To zoom in by a fixed amount (50%), right-click the map view and select Zoom in.
- The mouse scroll wheel can also be used to change zoom level on the map view instead of using the
and
tools.
Zooming out
Activate Zoom Out mode by clicking the button on the Tools toolbar or by pressing F10, then click once on the map view to zoom out by a fixed amount.
Tips:
- To zoom out by a fixed amount, right-click the map view and select Zoom out.
- The mouse scroll wheel can also be used to change zoom level on the map view instead of using the
and
tools.
Map view magnifier window
The magnifier window allows a small area of the map view to be seen in much greater detail. Moving the magnifier around the map view displays a small area around the cursor position at a much higher zoom level. Once the magnifier has been positioned, the standard selection and information
tools can be used within the magnified area.
To use the magnifier, move the mouse cursor while holding down the Ctrl and Shift keys. The magnifier is turned off by clicking the map view outside of the magnifier window.
To change the zoom level of the magnifier use the - and + keys.
Locator window
The Locator window allows you to pinpoint your exact location within a network. This can sometimes be difficult when you are zoomed in on a specific area. You can also use the Locator window to pan around the network, making it easy to move around the whole network quickly.
The Locator window displays a simple schematic of the entire network, with a highlighted box displaying the current location of the Map view in relation to the network as a whole.
The Locator window can be shown or hidden using an option on the context menu.
The Locator window must stay within the Map view window, but it can be resized and positioned within that window.
Panning
A powerful feature of the Locator window is the ability to move the area displayed by the main Map view quickly and easily anywhere in the network.
If you move the mouse pointer over the highlighted box in the locator map, it changes to a .
With this pointer showing, click and hold the left mouse button down. You can now drag the highlighted box anywhere within the network. Release the mouse button to pan the main Map view to this location.
Other zoom options
Other zoom options are available by right-clicking the map view and selecting an option from the context menu.
