Sheet Number and Index Sheet Format

PDF files use the OCR process to automatically extract:

By following the best practice design guidelines below, you'll increase the accuracy of sheet numbers and titles extracting correctly during the sheet publishing process.

Sheet Number Format and Location

Location In the title block at the bottom right corner of a landscape format sheet.
Text orientation Horizontal text which reads from left to right.
Font size Larger font size compared to the surrounding text.
Font type Standard or common font with continuous, filled-in bold characters. There should be white space between each character.

Avoid italics, stencil, or fonts which look like handwriting. Try not to write or draw anything on top of (or right next to) the sheet number.

Sheet Number Labeling

OCR will attempt to read and correctly extract the way your sheet number is labeled.

OCR expects sheet numbers to start with an alphabetical character. Sheet numbers which start with a number that looks like an alphabetical character may be extracted as an alphabetical character. For example, zero 0 may be extracted as oh O, or one 1 may be extracted as the letter l. Sheet numbers can be edited during the Review sheet numbers step of the publishing process, and after publication.

Important: Do not use underscores or spaces in the sheet number as they may be removed by OCR. Use hyphens or periods instead.

Sheet Number and Disciplines

Autodesk Build will automatically assign disciplines to sheets based on the initial characters in the sheet number. See the Disciplines help topic to learn more about creating, adding, and editing disciplines which are assigned to your sheets.

Index Sheet Format

If you create a PDF file with all sheets from a set, include an index sheet. During publishing, the information from the index sheet will automatically:

  • Populate sheet titles
  • Convert the sheet numbers in the index sheet into links. You can click a link in the index sheet to jump to the relevant sheet referenced in the project.

The way your index sheet is formatted will affect how well OCR can pick up titles and links:

File format The index sheet needs to be in vector format.
Text location Sheet numbers and titles should be on a single line.
Text spacing and proximity Sheet numbers and titles should be spaced reasonably close, with no text in between.
