Viewpoints FAQ

What are the differences between views and viewpoints?

In Model Coordination, a viewpoint is created against a view. Both views and viewpoints provide a way to isolate a specific subset of model data. But there are key differences in what can be saved with each of them, as shown below:

Key differences

Object colors
Sections
Hidden objects
Levels

In addition, the way views and viewpoints can be saved and updated differs:

  • Views:

    • Can be updated to capture changes in filters, models, or colors.
    • If you close a view without saving, changes are lost.
    • An asterisk (*) appears when unsaved changes exist.
  • Viewpoints:

    • Can be created at any time to capture filters, sections, levels, and hidden object settings.
    • Can't be updated; to change a viewpoint you have to create a new one.

Tips and limitations for working with viewpoints

Support for viewpoints between products

  • Model Coordination only supports viewpoints created in the multimodel, view context. Viewpoints from other products such as Navisworks, and those from single-model contexts such as Docs, are not supported.
  • Viewpoints created in Model Coordination are not supported in Docs, including when using the Save to Docs option, or in Navisworks, for example when using the Navisworks Coordination Issues Add-In.
  • Viewpoints created in Navisworks and other 3rd party products are supported in Docs.

Object colors

  • Object colors in Model Coordination are applied at the level of the view. Currently, viewpoints can't save different color profiles.

Spatial filters

  • Views in Model Coordination can't currently save spatial filters such as sections, levels, and hidden object settings. These settings can only be saved at the viewpoint level.

Editing viewpoints

  • Viewpoints can't be updated; you must create a new viewpoint when you want to make changes.
