Understanding Metadata Storage and File Sharing in Revit

The Autodesk Data Exchange Connector for Revit stores metadata related to the exchange directly within the Revit file. When the file is shared with others, this metadata is also shared, which can result in the unintentional transfer of exchange-related information. By being aware of how metadata is stored and shared in Revit, you can better manage the information contained within files and prevent the accidental dissemination of sensitive data.

Important Considerations:

  • The sharing of metadata can occur either intentionally or unintentionally when the file is shared with others.
  • It is important for users to understand that metadata is embedded within the Revit file. This ensures that users are aware of the potential for unintentional updates of exchanges.

Recommendations:

  • Before sharing files, you should review the contents to ensure that any sensitive metadata is intentionally shared.
  • Take necessary precautions to prevent unintentional updates or metadata exchange when sharing Revit files.
