Menu reference: Texture and color

Commands and command sections available in the main menu and the context menu

Note: Texts for command names and parameter labels have been reworked. This is just a cosmetic update: The commands and controls you have been using are still there, with their functionality unchanged, but they may now have new and improved names than what you have been used to.

Color

Assigning color values

Select

This is the default, no-operation mode. Left-click does nothing so that you can click around without risking accidental coloring or texturing. It is also the command best used to leave other modes.

Color triangles

Clicking on a triangle, or drawing across a triangle with left-click held down, assigns the color to it as chosen in the context view.

Color with brush

Assigns selected color to any triangle at least partially included in a circular brush

Color face group

Assigns selected color to any clicked face group

Disabled when mesh has no face groups defined that could be clicked

Color shells

Colors the entire shell belonging to the clicked triangle

Pick color

Takes the current color of the clicked triangle into the color selection

The mouse pointer remains a pointer. It does not change to an eyedropper unlike in other software using a color picker tool that you may know.

Tip: Press and hold the associated keyboard shortcut for this command to temporarily switch to picking a color from other coloring modes.

Texture

Assigning an image projection

Project texture

Project a texture onto the part using a primitive shape as a projection source. Recommended for whole-part, global texturing.

Flat plane, cylinder, sphere

Wrap texture

Lay textures directly onto the model surface by defining closed polyline plots. Recommended for localised texture patches like logos.

Modify

Manage or process existing texture or color data further

Extrude

Use existing color and/or texture information, interpreted in grayscale, to differentiatedly displace the triangle surface. Color extrusion displaces existing triangles, texture extrusion additionally subdivides existing triangles to match every texture pixel with a pair of triangles, or quad.

Remove all colors and textures

Clears any color and texture information. This applies to any such information that was present before opening Texture and color as well as any information added with it active.

Important: This does not revert any triangle subdivision from, say, gradient conversion.
Convert color to triangles

Subdivides triangles with color gradients into triangles with uniform color, as in, triangles with the same color value for each of their respective three vertices. The discretization distance, or coarsening, is adjustable.

Merge multi-properties

3MF permits multiple textures and colors defined for the same triangle. For any target applications that cannot deal with this in the expected manner, reducing the definitions may help. This command keeps the respective first definitions for textures and colors and drops any further definitions.

Zoom to

Shortcuts controlling the view

Zoom to part

Centers and focuses view on the part

Zoom to selection

If there are any selected face groups on the active mesh, the view centers and magnifies view onto the selection.

Zoom to area

Requests for you to drag a rectangular frame with the mouse, then centers and magnifies view on the framed area

Exit

Commands to leave the editor

Apply to part

Generates a new part with any changes and closes the editor, removing its entry from the project tree. Offers to delete the original part from the tree, too.

Same as Apply changes in the context view

Leave without applying

Ignores any changes and closes the editor, removing its entry from the project tree. There is no prompt for confirmation.

Same as Cancel in the context view

Context menus

Right-click options of elements in the 3D view

Note: In the Texture-and-color editor, only textures have a context menu.
Delete texture

Deletes the texture. This can be undone. It has no confirmation.

Scale texture

Resamples the texture to a new resolution

Convert texture

Converts the texture between image formats

JPG, BMP, PNG, TIFF, TGA

Swap texture

Provides a file browse dialog to pick a new image file used to replace the texture.

The new texture library is not used for this. However, its textures can still be used manually by navigating to its image files in <Netfabb installation folder>\Textures.

Export texture

Saves the texture as a dedicated image file
