Volume Materials
These materials, which are both represented in the Material Editor by , are specifically designed to be applied to VDBs. Volume Scatter and OpenVDB materials are created or loaded and can only be applied to volume nodes. They allow for the shading and rendering of volumetric data, such as smoke, clouds, or other volumetric effects.
The Volume Scatter material can be used to define basic homogeneous or heterogeneous (using procedural noise) volumetric effects.
The OpenVDB material can load a VDB grid that allows for the shading and rendering of more detailed volumetric data, such as smoke, clouds, or other volumetric effects. Density, scattering, absorption, and emission are properties that can be customized.
To create a volume material, in the Material Editor, select Create > Create Material > Volume Scatter or OpenVDB.
To change the volume in your scene, drag and drop a volume scatter material onto the volume's central cube in the viewport.
There are some things that are either not supported or limited when it comes to volumes. See Limitations for the list.
