Automated Drawing Extraction
Automated drawing extraction lets members:
- Split multipage drawing PDFs
- Extract attributes and values from the title blocks
- Save individual drawings and attributes to permissioned folders in the Files tool.
- Automatically generate hyperlinks in folders between sheet number callouts and text in drawings, and other drawings with the same sheet number attribute value (this is a phased rollout).
Key Capabilities
Access Drawings Across the Project Lifecycle
You can access automated drawing extraction from the Files tool which is available directly in some products, and also from Docs which is included in all the Autodesk Construction Cloud platform product offerings. This allows members to manage, review, and collaborate on their drawings in the same common data environment for all stages of the project lifecycle; design, preconstruction and construction phases.
This helps prevent drawing duplication between different products and help maintain a single source of truth.
Apply Title Block Templates
Project administrators can create title block templates which contain selected attributes and predefined capture areas drawn on the title block. Members can select a template for drawings of the same paper size and title block layout at the start of the extraction process. This helps to save the time and effort of manually defining capture areas and editing attributes.
Extract Custom Attributes
You can extract any custom attributes which exist in the project by adding them to title block templates, or during the extraction process by drawing capture areas on the title block.
Granular Permissions and Folder Structures
The Files tool allows you to define a folder structure tailored for drawing organization on your project. You can save extracted files to those folders including naming standard enforced folders. For example, individual drawings can be organized in folders for different phases or disciplines of a project.
Grant specific folder permissions to access and action drawings.
ISO 19650 Naming Convention
Naming standards enforce the standardization of file names for folders with a naming standard applied. You can save extracted files to naming standard enforced folders, checking file names in the file validator so they conform with the naming standard.
Automatically Hyperlink Drawings
After your drawings are extracted and saved to a folder, automatic hyperlinks will be turned on for that folder and all its subfolders. This means that any sheet number callouts are automatically converted into links if they reference drawings with the same sheet number attribute value in the folder and its subfolders. See Automatic Hyperlinks Settings for more details.
Leverage Files Tool Capabilities
As extracted files are saved to folders, they can take advantage of other file actions and workflow capabilities in the Files tool, such as review approval workflows.
Automated Drawing Extraction Limitations
The following are limitations in the Automated Drawing Extraction feature.
Sheet Number and Sheet Title
- When PDF files are published from the Files tool, their captured sheet number and sheet title attributes will not transfer to the Sheets tool. Sheet publishing will automatically run sheet numbering recognition from scratch and any sheet numbers can be edited.
- If the Sheet title and Sheet number attributes already exist in your project, their existing values will be overwritten. To retain your current attribute values, rename your existing sheet number and sheet title attributes before extraction. For example: Sheet number - Original.
Save to Folders
- A previously selected folder is not remembered when saving files.
- Pages rotated during extraction will not be saved as rotated.
Description Attributes
You can’t extract values for Description system attribute.
