Timeline Reference

Use these settings to help you navigate and perform tasks on the timeline. You can also right-click anywhere on the timeline to display a context menu of relevant operations for the type of element selected.

Tip: There is also a Timeline tab in the User Preferences menu with numerous other timeline-related settings and preferences.

Positioner and Focus Point

The positioner, a vertical yellow bar, is the "playhead" used to indicate which frame is displayed in the Player while playing or scrubbing the clip. The focus point is a horizontal yellow line on the positioner, indicating the current track.

The frame directly beneath the focus point, at the positioner's time, is displayed in the Player or is the current location for an edit such as a dissolve or cut.

To move the focus point use the following shortcuts:

Keyboard Shortcut Flame Assignation Smoke Classic Assignation
Previous Version/Track (Set Focus) PageDown Down arrow
Next Version/Track (Set Focus) PageUp Up arrow
Set Focus on Topmost Track Shift + PageUp Ctrl + Alt + Up arrow
Set Focus on Bottommost Track Shift + PageDown Ctrl + Alt + Down arrow

The focus point can also be gesturally moved by grabbing it and moving it up and down.

If the Prioritise Picking Mode is set to Prioritise Positioner Focus in the User Timeline Preferences, the focus can be grabbed. If Prioritise Segment Selection is set, the Alt key must be held down while the focus is moved.

Timebar

The timebar is the region where the time scale of the clip is indicated and where you can scrub to change the current time of the clip.

In the timebar, a lighter yellow box attached to the positioner indicates the length of the current frame, at the timeline zoom level. Click and drag in the timebar to move the positioner, so as not to accidentally move clips on the timeline.

The timebar can be displayed at the bottom or top of the Timeline canvas. By default, the timebar is displayed at the top. To move the timebar to the bottom, disable Timebar on Top from the Timeline Options drop-down menu.

Colour Management

The Edit Colour Space option from a Clip's context menu allows you to modify the colour management options of all the currently selected sources. This tool does not affect Sequences, only sources.

Tool Mode

Select whether to convert your media into a different colour space or only tag them.

Tagged Colour Space

Select the colour space to tag your media with. This does not modify pixel values, but it does affect how viewports display your media.

Input Colour Space

Select the source colour space of your media. From Source uses the currently tagged colour space, which allows you to easily convert a set of clips in various colour spaces to a common working space.

Working Colour Space

Select the destination colour space of your media. Set the Working Space first in order to filter the list of Input Colour Spaces to only show the compatible options. From Project takes the value from the Colour Management Preferences.

Get Colour Space From Selection

Click to initialise with the colour space of your primary selection.

Rendering

Rendering option

Select an option to render timeline effects. You can edit effects after rendering.

Select: To:
Render Selection Render the selected elements.
Render Render the topmost segment of a vertical composition.
Full Resolution Render at full resolution, regardless of the current working resolution.

Full Resolution and Proxy Render at both full and proxy resolution.
Include Handles Select to take the heads & tails into account when rendering.

Other options appear to set the rendering mode for the selected option if you are using Burn or Background Reactor.

Tip: If you need to refresh (or force) a render on a selection, first select Flush Renders from the Media submenu in the Timeline Gear menu, then re-render the selection.

Depending on how a clip is rendered, you can see a visual representation on the render bar at the top of the clip on the timeline:
