Making notes on PIX for macOS
View notes
You can view all comments on an item in the notes pane to the left of the viewer. If you do not see the Notes pane, you can expose it by going to View> Notes in the Menu bar.
If the note references a specific frame or page, you can double-click on the note to navigate there on the timeline.
The timeline also displays a marker (a light gray line) where any frame or page-specific notes are. Click on a timeline marker to navigate to the note associated with that frame or page.
Create a new note
To create a new note, click the New Note button under the playback controls.
By default, your note will be associated with the current frame or page. If you want to make a general note not associated with a frame or page, uncheck Attach to Current Frame.
Use the Permissions drop-down in the note window to adjust who can view your note. See more about editing note permissions at the bottom of this page.
Add a Markup
To add markups to your file, open the New Note window. The Markup tools will be exposed on the left side of the viewer.
Use the Pen to draw freely on the screen, or select a rectangle, ellipse, or arrow. You can also adjust the color of your markups by clicking the colored square at the bottom of the Markup tools.
Markups are attached to the current frame of the clip being viewed. Notes containing a markup are indicated in the Notes panel with [MARKUP].
Aspect Ratio Tool
Add a fixed aspect ratio* mark up using the Frame Overlay button in the Mark Up tools. Adjust the Aspect, Scale, and Opacity and position the frame overlay on the content as needed. Once saved, the frame overlay will appear as Frame Line in the notes pane.
*This tool is only available on PIX 2 for macOS versions 2.95+
Use Quick Notes
When viewing content, use pre-saved quick notes to create a new note without having to pause the content you are viewing.
You can save frequently used notes as a quick note by clicking the Edit Quick Notes drop-down next to the New Note button. You can add and re-order your quick notes.
You can save quick notes for clips, PDFs, Images, or for all content (default).
Control visibility on your notes
The permission settings on the project and your account will determine who can view the notes you make by default, however you do have the ability to change the visibility on your notes. There are 3 types of note permissions:
- Private notes are only viewable by the note creator.
- Same as Item notes are viewable by all users who can view the item.
- Custom notes are visible to only users or groups you select.
Customizing your note's visibility for select users:
- Use the Permissions drop-down in the bottom left of the New Note and select Custom. An Edit button will appear just to the right.
- Click Edit.
- Click the +/- button to type a new user under the User/Group section - or open your Address Book to select users and groups.
- Double click a user or a group to populate in your note permissions panel.
- Click Save
Any users/groups in the permissions panel will now have visibility on your note.
To remove someone's visibility to your note, simply edit your note, navigate back to the Custom>Edit permissions pane, select the user/group, and hit Delete or the minus button.
A custom group of users can be set up to view your notes by default if necessary. That way, you will not have to adjust each note's permission as they are created. Request custom notes groups by contacting your project’s Gatekeeper.
Edit or Delete a Note
To edit or delete a note select the note and click the Edit Note or Delete Note button at the bottom of the notes pane.
Export Notes
Notes made on a file can be exported from PIX.
To export notes, select a file and click the Info button in the top menu bar. Navigate to the Notes tab, and click Export Notes.
Choose the format you would like to export (Text file, PIX XML, Final Cut Pro XML, or Avid Marker List).
