Create a new item version to remove CAD

You may create a new version of an item that contains mechanical CAD in the web application, however, this process removes the CAD file and any drawings and translations in the new item version. Therefore, you would generally revise items that contain CAD in the CAD plugin.

However, you may want to create a new item version and remove its CAD file and any drawings and translations for several reasons, such as:

  • A purchased part has been created with its Manufacturer and Manufacturer Item Number established, but its CAD model is incorrect or updated from the manufacturer.
  • You’re revising an old project with some new designs but want to maintain item numbers to easily see its connection to the original item.
Note: This topic applies only to items that contain mechanical CAD data. When you revise an Electrical package, the new version of the Electrical package retains all of its CAD files, drawings, and translations.

To create a new item version without its CAD:

  1. Navigate to the BOM section of the project.

  2. Locate the item you want to revise in Navigation pane and load it into the center view.

  3. Click more actions icon next to the item.

  4. Select New Version.

Upchain displays a warning message that the item contains a CAD file and that the new version will no longer contain the CAD file.

  5. Click Continue.

When this process finishes:

  • Upchain displays a confirmation message.
  • The item version is incremented by one (eg. from v0 to v1).
  • The new item version is in development.
  • The new item version does not contain any CAD files, drawing, or translations that the original item version had. Other supporting documentation is maintained. The previous item version retains the CAD files, drawings, and translations.
  • The new item version is placed only in the location from which you loaded it in the navigation pane. In other words, the new item version will not appear in any other location where the original item is located.
