Committing changes to a network

When you want to change an existing network, only your local working version is modified. The original version of the network is kept in the database. When you have finished editing the network, you must commit the changes to the database. This is logged in the version history. You can then check that the data you have imported is valid and make any necessary corrections.

The following steps will open the network, make some changes and commit the new version to the database:

  1. Open a network targeting for editing:
    • For example, right-click the 'Newtown Network' network (any network will do) and select Open. If another user has been working on the network then periodically choose Update (get changes made by others).
    • Sometimes it may be necessary to create a new branch for a model. To branch a network, right-click and select Show commit history. Select the version you wish to branch and click the Branch button. The New Name - Network dialog is displayed. Type in an appropriate name for the branched network.

    • The network is displayed in the GeoPlan view ready for editing.

  2. A network open in the GeoPlan view can be edited, which is covered here. Once the editing is complete, the network should be checked for errors. See Validating the network topic for more details.

We are now going to cover how to commit the network back to the database.

  3. To commit a network:The icon for checked-out networks has a red border.
    • Right-click the uncommitted network icon in the Model Group window and select Commit changes to database.

    • Do not validate the network at this stage (that is, click No on the following message).

    • You are given the opportunity to enter comments relating to the network. Enter a comment and click OK. No other user can make changes to this version of the network until it has been checked in. If you close down InfoWorks WS Pro without checking in the network, it will still be checked out the next time you start the program.

    Validation comment

    • The network is now committed. To show this, the network icon in the Model Group window no longer has a red exclamation mark (!).
  4. Close the GeoPlan view by clicking the Close button in the top right corner of the window.
