Extracting data from surfaces for a profile group (PartMaker)

When creating the following types of profile groups in PartMaker/Mill and PartMaker/Turn-Mill, you can extract data from selected surfaces on a solid model for use in the Profile Group Parameters dialog:

To select several surfaces on a solid model, press and hold the Shift key and use the left mouse button to select the surfaces.

Note: You cannot select more than one surface at a time when using Mill ZX, Mill Diameter Polar, and Mill Polygon faces.

The type of Face on which the surfaces are located affects how PartMaker extracts the data:

How PartMaker extracts data for Planar faces

Using the selected surfaces (highlighted in red), PartMaker finds the perpendicular distance from the Face Coordinate System Origin to the maximum point of all of the selected surfaces and sets this to be the Surf value (see ). PartMaker also finds the perpendicular distance from the minimum point to the maximum point of all of the selected surfaces and sets the difference between these points to the Depth (see) .

How PartMaker extracts data for Cylindrical faces

Using the selected surfaces (highlighted in red), PartMaker finds the radial distance from the Face Coordinate System Origin to the maximum point of all of the selected surfaces and sets this to be the Surf value. PartMaker also finds the radial distance from the minimum point to the maximum point of all of the selected surfaces and sets the difference between these points to be the Depth.

In the example shows above, R2 is the Surf value and R2–R1 is the Depth.

How PartMaker extracts data for Mill Polygon/Mill Diameter Polar faces

If the selected surface is parallel to the face of the part, PartMaker finds the perpendicular distance from the face of the part to the selected surface and sets this to the Distance value (see). PartMaker determines if the surface is facing or opposing the face of the part and selects the appropriate value (Right Tool Edge or Left Tool Edge) for the To field.

If the selected surface is perpendicular to the face of the part, PartMaker finds the perpendicular distance from the face of the part to the approximate center of the selected surface and sets this to be the Distance value (see ). PartMaker also sets the To field for the tool position to Tool Center.
