Long Section Window

This window displays a cross-section through the length of a selected run of network objects. Using this view you can:

  • Inspect a run of nodes and pipes
  • Edit network objects by accessing their object properties window
  • Create long sections from Branch ID (see Defining Branches for more details)
  • Insert a node into a pipe displayed on the view

The Long Section window is displayed when:

  • The Long Section Pick () button of the GeoPlan Tools Toolbar is clicked and a long section subsequently picked on the GeoPlan.
  • The New Long Section ( ) button of the Window Toolbar is clicked.
    • If network objects have been previously selected on the GeoPlan, these objects will be displayed on the Long Section Window.
    • An empty Long Section Window is displayed if no network objects are selected on the GeoPlan. Select the desired objects on the GeoPlan, then right-click anywhere inside the empty Long Section Window and select Create from Selection.

What is the Long Section Window?

The Long Section Window displays a cross-section through the length of a selected run of network objects. There are options for changing the way in which the long section is viewed and altering the labels that are displayed.

You can have several Long Section Windows open at the same time. Each Long Section Window may have multiple pages.

For Long Section Windows containing multiple pages, the page number will appear in the toolbar. Use the Next ( ) and Previous () arrow buttons of the toolbar to scroll through the pages.

If a branch is displayed in the Long Section Window, the branch number will also appear in the toolbar. Use the Next ( ) and Previous () arrow buttons to scroll through branches in order of branch number.

Nodes can be inserted or added as a lateral connection to pipes in the network via the Long Section Window. Click on the GeoPlan Tools Toolbar and select Node in the New Object Type combo box to turn on New Object mode and click on the pipe, in the Long Section Window, to which a node is to be added. The Create New Node Dialog will be displayed.

The property sheet for an object can be opened by using the Properties tool or by double clicking on the object in the long section using the Select tool .

The Section Properties Dialog allows you to decide what grid labels are displayed along the x-axis and how network parameters are represented in the view.

Custom Labels may be added to the view by use of the Label tool .

Selecting Network Objects on the Long Section

There are two ways in which objects can be selected on the GeoPlan from the Long Section View:

  • Select individual nodes or pipes from the strip plan at the top of the Long Section Window or directly from the objects on the Long Section Window using the select tool . The selected node / link will be selected on the GeoPlan. Hold the CTRL key to add other objects to the strip plan / GeoPlan selection by clicking on them.
  • Right click on the Long Section Window and choose Select nodes & pipes from the popup menu OR click the Select All button of the toolbar . This will select all long section nodes and pipes on the GeoPlan.

Long Section Window options

Right-click over the long section to display a context menu with the following options.

Note that these commands can also be selected from the Section menu when a Long Section Window is the currently active view.

Object type

Node or Pipe, depending which object is the closest to where the mouse has been right-clicked on the Long Section Window. This opens a context menu for that particular object with the following options:

  • Select / Deselect
  • Properties. Opens the Property Sheet for the network object. (The property sheet for an object can also be opened by using the Properties tool or by double clicking on the object using the Select tool .)
  • Label. Adds a Custom Label to the network object.
  • Zoom to. Zooms to the network object on the Long Section Window.
  • Graph. (InfoWorks networks only).
  • View 3D Manhole. Opens the 3D Manhole window of the network object (InfoWorks networks only).

Flip view

Flip the long section horizontally, which reverses the direction in which the long section is being viewed.

Clear long section

Remove the long section display from the current window.

Clear all custom labels

Remove all custom labels from the current window.

Select nodes & links

The nodes and pipes displayed on the long section become selected in all views. Selected Network Objects are highlighted in red.

Create from selection

Create a long section view from the pipes that are currently selected on the GeoPlan Window.

Create from selected branches

Create a multi-page Long Section Window using the Branch IDs of the pipesthat are currently selected on the Geographical Window.

A page will be created for each branch with a currently selected link(s). Pages are sorted in order of Branch ID.

Export to AutoCAD DWG

Save the current long section window to DWG format. The long section can then be opened and viewed in AutoCAD.

Links grid

Open a Grid Window of links displayed on the long section.

Nodes grid

Open a Grid Window of nodes displayed on the long section.

Add page

Add a page to the Long Section Window after the current page.

Remove page

Remove the current page from the Long Section Window.

Properties

Displays the Section Properties dialog, where changes can be made to the way in which the long section is displayed, such as inclusion of a strip plan and implementation of node and pipe labels, for example.

Moving around the view

The following keyboard keys and icons on the toolbar allow you to move around the Long Section view:

Zoom In

Click or press F9, and then drag the mouse over the area on which you wish to zoom in. Pressing the SHIFT key activates the QuickZoom feature. This allows you to zoom in on the view without changing the currently selected tool. QuickZoom remains in effect until you release the SHIFT key. (To zoom out again, use the Zoom Out button.)

Zoom Out

Click , and then click on the Long Section view to zoom out from the current view.

Alternatively, the mouse scroll wheel can be used to zoom in and out on the Long Section Window.

You can also scroll horizontally through the Long Section view using the following keyboard keys:

  • Ctrl+Page Up - scroll to the left
  • Ctrl+Page Down - scroll to the right
