A spine is a reference line on which laterals hang. You can edit the spine to change the shape of the surface.
- Select the surface.
- Click Surface Tools tab > Add panel > Items > Spine.
A spine is added to the surface in the current direction, which is not always longitudinal. If the current direction is lateral, the laterals and longitudinals are swapped, and the surface is reversed.
