EC3 Integration for Autodesk Takeoff

This EC3 Integration is not related to the Carbon Accounting BETA features for Takeoff. Learn more about the Carbon Accounting BETA in Takeoff.

The Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3) integration is available for use in Autodesk Takeoff. EC3 Integration for Takeoff allows you to import Autodesk Takeoff packages in Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) directly into EC3 and export EC3 reports directly into Autodesk Docs.

Using EC3 can help your team identify the critical areas where the largest embodied carbon savings are available and enable visualizations and reports that are easier to line up with other construction documents.

Note:

The EC3 Integration is compatible with Autodesk Build and Autodesk BIM 360 Docs, and with Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox, but not IE11.

To learn more about the EC3 app, visit EC3 for Autodesk Construction Cloud® in the Autodesk App Store.

This help article describes how to:

  • Set up EC3 to use in Takeoff

    • Create an EC3 account
    • Install and activate EC3 for your Autodesk Construction Cloud account as an account administrator
    • Configure classifications in Takeoff settings to use EC3
  • Use EC3 with Takeoff

    • Import data from Takeoff into EC3
    • Refine data in EC3
    • Export a report from EC3
    • Import a report into Autodesk Docs

Set up EC3 Integration to Use in Takeoff

To use EC3 in ACC and Takeoff, you must first create an EC3 account, install and activate EC3 in ACC, and configure classifications in Takeoff settings.

Create an EC3 Account

  1. Register for Building Transparency's EC3 using your Autodesk ID at https://buildingtransparency.org/auth/register.
  2. Navigate to the bottom of the page, and click the SIGN UP WITH AUTODESK button. If you already have an EC3 account, you can skip this step; EC3 will prompt you to for your Autodesk credentials later on.
  3. On the Authorize Application page, review the information that Building Transparency would like to access (i.e., identity, data). If you approve this authorization, click "Allow" at the bottom of the page.
  4. Review and agree to the User Agreement, Terms of Use, and Privacy Notice on the EC3 page at https://buildingtransparency.org/ec3. Your account should be activated.

Install and Activate EC3 in ACC

Note:

You must be an ACC Account Administrator to install and activate EC3 in ACC. This activation only needs to be done once per ACC company account.

  1. In your ACC account, open Account Admin and click Apps in the left navigation. This will open the App gallery.
  2. Scroll down to find the EC3 for Autodesk Construction Cloud® app.
  3. Install and activate EC3.

Configure Takeoff Settings for Using EC3

EC3 works best in Takeoff when projects use Masterformat as Classification system 1 and ICMS as Classification system 2 in Takeoff settings. The classification system must be set in Takeoff before beginning takeoff on a project.

Use EC3 with Takeoff

Import Data from Takeoff into EC3

  1. Select Plan & Compare Buildings in the left navigation of EC3 at https://buildingtransparency.org/ec3.

  2. Click a + Building Project button on the page.

  3. Select From Autodesk in the dropdown that opens.

If not yet logged in, select Autodesk Login button to log in so EC3 can display your ACC project list.

  4. Find the project that you want to import, and open Construction packages to view available takeoff packages for the project.

  5. Select checkboxes for all takeoff packages that you want to import.

  6. Click Import by the ‘Construction packages’ row.

Refine Data in EC3

  1. Navigate to a project in EC3 by clicking My buildings or Shared with Me.

  2. Scroll to bottom of the project page for a table view of quantities.

  3. Identify items for refining carbon data. Brown icons to the left of the item name indicate that the data has not been refined since Takeoff import.

  4. Open items for refinement by hovering over an item and clicking Refine.

    • Check that quantities have imported correctly.
    • Refine material information as appropriate.
  5. The icon to the left of the item name will turn blue to indicate it has been refined since import.

  6. When done editing, return to the project page, and click Save in the top right to save all refined data.

Export a Report from EC3

When ready to export data from EC3:

  1. Navigate to the project page in EC3.

  2. Scroll to the quantities table at the bottom of the page.

  3. Click Reports at the top right of the quantities table.

  4. Select the desired report template from the Download Reports dialog.

Reports selected in the Send To Autodesk column will be imported directly to Autodesk Docs on export. See Import a report into Autodesk Docs in this article to learn more.

Import a Report into Autodesk Docs

Important:

To send an EC3 report to Docs, you must have permissions in Docs to add a folder and write to Project Files. Contact your Project Administrator about permissions for Docs.

  1. From EC3, click Reports at the top right of the Quantities table.

  2. This will open a Download Reports dialog, where you can select a report template.

  3. Click one of the report types in the Send to Autodesk column. This will import the report into Autodesk Docs.

EC3 reports that have been sent to Autodesk and imported to Docs are automatically stored in the EC3 folder in Project Files in Autodesk Docs.
