Viewing simulation results

Simulation results are viewed in the Baseline Map view of the Operator.

The simulation to be viewed is selected from the Run Manager.

Viewing results on the Map view

There are several methods that can be used to highlight results parameters during replays of the simulation:

  • Themes can be used to display the changes to a single parameter during a simulation. See Themes window.
  • You can use configurable labels to display fixed data about important network objects for reference. See Results on Labels.
  • You can use the Display page of the Map View Properties dialog to hide unwanted detail such as name labels or symbols.

Note: You can use more than one theme, including one contour theme, on the same replay. You will have to be very careful with your choice of colours and other settings to prevent the display becoming confused if you use more than one of these tools at a time.

Viewing results on grid views

When viewing simulation replays you can view a numeric replay of the results. The replay controls are used to play, pause, step through, or rewind the simulation. You can use all the grid functions to sort results, copy results to the clipboard, or export results to CSV files. See Using grids.

Displaying results data on a grid for all network objects

The Node Results, Link Results and Object Group Results windows are opened from within IWLive Pro Operator Client.

  • Choose a results view from the Window | Grid views sub-menu.

Results windows contain a different spreadsheet style grid for each type of network object. Each column in the grid contains results for a particular field, with each row in the grid listing the values for a single object. The display of results is controlled by the Selection window.

Displaying results data on a grid for a single network object

To display a grid of time varying data for a single network object:

  1. Select the run to view from the Run Manager.
  2. Click the (Grid) tool on the Results toolbar.
  3. On the Map view, click the network object that you want to see results for.

If more than one network object is under the pointer, a multiple selection dialog will be displayed from which you can choose the required object.

A grid of time varying results will be displayed in a Results Grid/Graph window at the bottom of the Baseline page.

Notes:

  • The grid name is added to the Grid menu. The name of the grid is automatically generated in the format: Display Name (Asset type).
  • Grid results can be displayed for a selected time period by adjusting replay start and finish times on the Replay Options dialog and checking the Apply to Grid and Graph Tools option.
  • A graph of time varying data can be displayed by carrying out the same procedure, but holding down the Ctrl key and clicking the network object. Alternatively, you can use the Graph tool (Graph) tool.

Displaying results data on a grid for selected network objects

To display a grid of time varying data for a selection of network objects:

  1. Select the run to view from the Run Manager.
  2. On the Map view, select one or more network objects that you want to see results for.

Any mixture of nodes and links may be selected.

  3. Click the (Grid selected objects ) tool on the Results toolbar.

The Grid Selection dialog will be displayed.

  4. Select the options required from the dialog:
    • Choose the type of object to be included in the grid using the object radio buttons.
    • Select the attribute to be displayed in the grid. The attributes list contains time varying results that are available for the chosen type of object.
    • Optionally, deselect objects from the objects list to reduce the number of objects included in the grid.
  5. Click OK.

Viewing results on graphs

It is possible to use graphs to view simulation results, as described in the sections below.

Displaying results data on a graph for a single network object

To display a graph of time varying data for a single network object:

  1. Select the run to view from the Run Manager.
  2. Click the Graph tool (Graph) tool on the Results toolbar.
  3. On the Map view, click the network object that you want to see results for.

If more than one network object is under the pointer, a multiple selection dialog will be displayed from which you can choose the required object.

The Graph Pick Selection dialog will be displayed, offering a choice of time varying data to graph. The list will be appropriate to the type of network object selected.

  4. Select one or more properties to graph, then click OK.

A time varying graph will be displayed in a Results Grid/Graph window at the bottom of the Baseline page. The graph name is added to the Graph menu. This name is automatically generated in the format: Display Name (Asset type): Variable

Notes:

  • If live data is linked to an object for verification purposes, a live data trace will also be displayed when the appropriate parameter is graphed for that object.
  • Graph results can be displayed for a selected time period by adjusting replay start and finish times on the Replay Options dialog and checking the Apply to grid and graph tools option.
  • The red time line display on the graph shows the current time of the simulation, mirroring the current time of the simulation on the Map view. To jump to a different simulation time, you can drag and drop the red line to the desired simulation time directly on the graph. The simulation date and time will be updated accordingly on the Map view.
  • A grid of time varying data can be displayed by carrying out the same procedure, by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking the network object. Alternatively, you can use the (Grid) tool.
  • The Graph properties option on the context menu allows you to change the properties of the graph.
  • The Export traces to CSV option on the context menu allows you to export traces to CSV.

Displaying results data on a graph for selected network objects

To display a graph of time varying data for a selection of network objects:

  1. Select the run to view from the Run Manager.
  2. Select one or more network objects that you want to see results for.

Any mixture of nodes and links may be selected. If the objects selected are of the same type, two shared parameters can be plotted. If a mixture of object types is selected, one parameter may be plotted for each type.

  3. Click the Graph tool (Graph selected objects) tool on the Results toolbar.

The Graph Selection dialog will be displayed.

  4. Select the options required from the dialog:
    • Optionally deselect objects from either of the lower lists to reduce the number of traces displayed.
    • Use the Common Object Selection check box to synchronise the selections in the lower list on the right with those on the left. This option is available only if the chosen network objects are all nodes or all links.

    • Use the Swap Left/Right button to switch the two sets of lists (upper and lower). The list set on the left is displayed on the left axis of the graph.

    • In each of the upper lists, choose the parameter (attribute) to plot on the two axes.
  5. Click OK.

A time varying graph will be displayed in a Results Grid/Graph window at the bottom of the Baseline page. The graph name is added to the Graph menu. This name is automatically generated in the format: Display Name (Asset type): Variable.

  • The Graph properties option on the context menu allows you to change the properties of the graph.
  • The Export traces to CSV option on the context menu allows you to export traces to CSV.

Carrying out upstream and downstream traces

The upstream trace and downstream trace tools can be used on a Map view displaying simulation results to analyse direction of flow through the network.

The trace selects all objects in the upstream or downstream direction of flow from a selected link at the currently displayed simulation time.

To carry out a trace:

  1. Select the run to view from the Run Manager.
  2. For an upstream trace, click the Upstream trace (Trace and select links upstream) tool or, for a downstream trace, click the Downstream trace (Trace and select links downstream) tool on the Trace toolbar.
  3. In the Map view, click the start link for the trace.

The tool will trace all routes in the upstream or downstream direction of flow from the selected starting link.

    The trace will stop at:

    • links with flow < 0.01 l/s
    • links with flow in the wrong direction
    • reservoir, well, fixed head, and transfer nodes
