Matte Edge

Use the Matte Edge node to create an image based on the detected edges, or use it to modify the edges of a matte to help in creating a key.

Access To access the Matte Edge menu, use:
  • Batch, then select the node from the All Nodes bin.
  • Timeline, then use Batch FX. See Creating Batch FX.
  • Modular Keyer, then select the node from the All Nodes bin.
Inputs
  • Front - The clip from which to generate a matte, or modify the edges.
  • Matte - A grayscale clip used to constrain where the effect is applied.
Output OutMatte - The matte generated from the front clip.

The output of the node is a Matte; hence, the output colour space is tagged as Matte.

You can add the Matte Edge node to any part of the pipeline except the Front pipe of the Colour Blend node. The Matte Edge node is not appropriate for this pipe because its result is a matte.

Settings

Edges

Edges

Enable to create an image composed of the edges from the Front clip.

Detection option

Select whether to use the Basic, Advanced or Smooth edge-detection algorithm. Certain settings change based on this selection.

Width field

Sets the value that affects how the edge-detection algorithm determines whether each pixel forms part of the edge.

Minimum Input field

Sets the lower limit of the luminance values. Pixels with values below are mapped to black.

Maximum Input field

Sets the upper limit of the luminance values. Pixels with values above are mapped to white.

Minimum Input field

Sets the lower limit of the luminance values. Pixels with values below are mapped to black.

Maximum Input field

Sets the upper limit of the luminance values. Pixels with values above are mapped to white.

Inner Width field

Sets the width of the inner edges.

Outer Width field

Sets the width of the outer edges.

Width Proportional

Enable to affect the inner and outer width proportionally.

Inner Softness field

Sets the level of softness on the inner edges.

Outer Softness field

Sets the level of softness on the outer edges.

Softness Proportional

Enable to affect the inner and outer softness proportionally.

Smooth Minimum field

Sets the lower limit for the edge detection.

Smooth Maximum field

Sets the upper limit for the edge detection.

Smooth Softness field

Sets the level of softness on the edge.

Smooth Gain field

Sets the level of softness gain on the edge.

Shrink

Shrink

Enable to remove pixels from the edges.

Shrink option

Select whether to use shrink in a single pass or iterative mode. Single Pass mode allows you to control edge softness.

Width field

Sets the width of the border that is removed from the edges.

Softness field

Sets the amount of softness applied to the edges.

This control is only available when the Single Pass mode is selected.

Minimum Input field

Sets the lower limit of the luminance values. Pixels with values below are mapped to black.

Maximum Input field

Sets the upper limit of the luminance values. Pixels with values above are mapped to white.

Erode

Erode

Enable to blend the light and dark edges.

Width field

Sets the width of the border to soften.

Blur

Blur

Enable to apply a softening Gaussian blur filter to the edges.

Width field

Sets the width of the blur applied to the edges.

Height field

Sets the height of the blur applied to the edges.

Blur Proportional

Enable to blur the width and height proportionally.

Matte Luminance Curve

Matte Luminance Curve

Control the blending of the edges. You can add keyframes to the curve using Add Points mode, move keyframes with Select mode, and modify the curve's shape using tangent handles.

Reset

Reset the curve to its default values.

Home

Reset the position and zoom of the curves canvas.

Noise

Noise

Enable to add noise to the transparent areas of the matte.

Noise Mode option

Select the mode of noise to apply throughout the length of the image. Static adds noise as a still frame; Impulse adds noise that changes at each frame.

Select: To add noise:
Static As a still frame. You can move the static noise using the Position X and Y fields.
Impulse Changing at each frame, but always starting from the same seed.

Weight field

Sets the level of noise in the clip. Values below 1 add more white noise, and values above 1 add black noise.

Softness field

Sets the level of Gaussian softness added to the noise.

Position X field

Sets the X position of the noise when using Static mode.

Position Y field

Sets the Y position of the noise when using Static mode.

Size X field

Sets the size of the noise along the X axis.

Size Y field

Sets the size of the noise along the Y axis.

Proportional

Enable to affect the X and Y sizes proportionally.
