To extract triangles into a new part

Extract sections of surface for further processing

It can be useful to extract a select number of triangles to create a new part. For example, you can extract a region of the part and open the repair module again to work on the extracted region.

There are two commands in the repair module available to do this, Extract Selected Triangles as Part and Separate Selection as Part.

  1. Select one or more triangles to be extracted as a part.
  2. Pick your next steps depending on the functionality provided by these two tools
Step Extract Selected Triangles as Part Separate Selection as Part
    Selection

Click Extract Parts > Extract Selected Triangles as Part.

Click Extract Parts > Separate Selection as Part.

    Extraction

A dialog appears: "Remove extracted triangles?"

When the new part is created and added to the project tree, the triangles you selected on the original part are ...

    • Yes: ... deleted from the mesh.
    • No: ... not deleted from the mesh.

When the new part is created and added to the project tree, the triangles you selected on the original part are deleted from the mesh.

    View Change

The view is returned to the default module. The repair module remains loaded on the original part and no changes to it are applied. You may now choose to reenter the repair module and click Apply or do something else.

Tip: If you are extracting the triangles to operate on them in isolation, choose Yes to delete the region from the original part. Later, when you are ready to piece the two regions back together, you can click and drag the repaired part back into the first repair.

The view is returned to the default module and the repair module is unloaded from the original part.

    Original Part

    The original part remains unchanged.

The removal of the triangles is applied to the part.
